A North Waikato teacher, previously dismissed for alleged serious misconduct during an U15 rugby trip, has been reinstated by Ministry of Education-appointed commissioner Brad Totorewa.
The decision follows the mass resignation of parent representatives on the Onewhero Area School Board of Trustees amid heated controversy.
Totorewa reviewed the case, finding that while the teacher’s actions could constitute misconduct, outright dismissal was not warranted. Instead, the teacher will face conditions such as professional development and mentoring to ensure adherence to school standards.
The teacher’s return has reignited tensions, with former board chair Amie Morgan filing complaints to Education Minister Erica Stanford, criticizing the commissioner for prioritizing the teacher’s reputation over student safety.
The former board’s decision to dismiss the teacher followed an independent investigation and legal consultation, which the Ministry of Education initially supported.
According to legacy media, community members remain divided, with some backing the teacher’s reinstatement and others expressing concern over the handling of the incident.
