Wairoa is grappling with the aftermath of devastating flooding that has caused damage estimated at over $40 million.
Approximately 500 properties were inundated following heavy rains on the East Coast last week, leaving the town struggling to cope.
Mayor Craig Little described the heartbreaking sight to state media of soaked carpets and ruined possessions piled up along the streets.
With the town’s landfill already overwhelmed from Cyclone Gabrielle, the cost of transporting the debris to other locations adds to the burden. The community, already facing a 20 percent rate hike, cannot shoulder the cleanup expenses alone, prompting Little to seek government assistance.
Emergency Management and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell has pledged $300,000 to Mayoral Relief Funds to support Wairoa and neighboring communities. He plans to request additional funding from the Cabinet to aid in the town’s recovery.
Nothing will fix this problem. The township of Wairoa is built right where the river will NATURALLY over spill.
Just look up a meandering river. Basic geography.
Makes you wonder why the government is backing a project in Rotorua that is situated right next to a meandering stream that IS KNOWN TO FLOOD. With all this talk about managed retreat and places not being insurable why in the hell are they building new homes in these zones??? Madness.
