Wellington Airport’s main terminal building and southwest pier were evacuated on Friday evening after a smoke alarm was activated and a fire involving a piece of machinery was reported.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded at about 7.15pm, escalating the incident to a second alarm level and deploying nine fire trucks, while a sprinkler system was also activated. No injuries were reported.
Air New Zealand suspended flights in and out of Wellington until further notice and allowed affected passengers to change bookings free of charge.
Sounds Air delayed services from Nelson and Blenheim, while Jetstar said its flights were unaffected. Emergency services remained at the scene as the airport advised passengers to check with their airlines for flight updates.
