Youth worker avoids jail for sexual offending

Fale McCarthy news

Fale McCarthy, a 39-year-old Australian convicted of indecently assaulting two women in Auckland in 2014, has avoided jail time and been sentenced to nine months supervision, 100 hours of community work, and $1000 in reparations to each victim, sparking outrage from one of his victims, who was 16 at the time of the assault.

McCarthy, a former youth worker, claimed in court he had secured a job with the Uniting Church in Melbourne to reunite with his family, but the church denied any association with him when contacted by legacy media, stating they would not hire someone with such convictions.

The assaults involved predatory behaviour, including sucking a teenager’s toes under a manipulative pretense and groping an intoxicated woman, with the victim alleging numerous incidents against multiple women that were not prosecuted.

Despite his defense pushing for a discharge without conviction citing family and job prospects, Judge David Sharp convicted McCarthy.
