Auckland FC moved to within one point of the top of the A-League Men after a 1-2 win over Newcastle Jets FC at McDonald Jones Stadium, ending the home side’s 10-match unbeaten run.

Auckland took an early lead when Sam Cosgrove turned in a low cross from Jesse Randall after 15 minutes, before Clayton Taylor levelled for Newcastle with a well-worked finish before halftime.

The visitors regained control in the second half when Randall again sparked the move, finding Francis de Vries whose delivery was headed home by Cosgrove for his 10th goal of the season, sending him to the top of the scoring charts.

Newcastle pushed hard late, but Auckland held firm to tighten the premiership race with both sides set to face the same five opponents in the run home
