Auckland FC’s remarkable inaugural A-League season came to a dramatic end on Saturday night with a semi-final upset loss to Melbourne Victory at a sold-out Go Media Mt Smart Stadium.
Holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, the minor premiers needed only a draw to secure a historic home grand final, but the visitors dashed those hopes in front of a record crowd.
Despite the electric atmosphere and strong local support, Auckland couldn’t hold on, ending a fairy-tale debut campaign in disappointment.
