Liverpool’s owners have agreed to sell roughly a third of the Premier League club to 1892 Holdings, a consortium whose investors include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Fenway Sports Group confirmed a definitive agreement had been reached for the minority investment, which reportedly values Liverpool at between £5 billion and £6 billion. The consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, who is expected to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman and join an expanded board following regulatory approval.
Bezos is investing through venture capital firm K5 Sports and will not personally take a board position, although K5 founder Bryan Baum is expected to join. Saverin’s wife, Elaine, will also take a board seat.
The investment is not expected to alter Liverpool’s transfer strategy or provide a separate transfer budget. The agreement also gives 1892 Holdings an option to increase its stake in the future, potentially positioning the consortium to acquire a controlling interest if FSG eventually decides to sell.
