England have placed New Zealand in a dire position in the second test at Wellington’s Basin Reserve, leading by a staggering 533 runs at stumps on day two.
A Gus Atkinson hat-trick, the first ever at the Basin Reserve, dismantled the Black Caps’ lower order as New Zealand were skittled for 125 in response to England’s first-innings total of 280.
England then piled on the pressure with the bat, amassing 378/5 in their second innings, thanks to significant contributions from Ben Duckett (92), Jacob Bethell (96), and an unbeaten 73 from Joe Root.
The Black Caps struggled from the start of the day, losing Tom Blundell and Will O’Rourke early before Atkinson’s stunning three-wicket burst ended their innings abruptly. England capitalized on their momentum, with Harry Brook, Root, and captain Ben Stokes showcasing aggressive batting. Stokes remains undecided on declaring overnight, leaving New Zealand with an almost impossible task heading into day three. Despite occasional breakthroughs from Tim Southee and Glenn Phillips, New Zealand’s bowlers were unable to contain England’s onslaught, putting the hosts firmly on the back foot.
