The Football Ferns have secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Papua New Guinea women’s national football team in Auckland, overcoming a frustrating first half where missed chances, strong defending, and VAR decisions kept the match scoreless.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, New Zealand struggled to convert until Katie Kitching broke the deadlock with a header early in the second half.
While the result confirms their place at the tournament, the performance fell short of expectations given their otherwise commanding qualifying campaign, as Papua New Guinea now turns to an intercontinental playoff for another chance to advance.
