Liam Lawson has criticised McLaren for playing the British anthem at race wins, insisting the team should instead honour its New Zealand roots by playing God Defend New Zealand in tribute to founder Bruce McLaren.
Though McLaren races under a British license, Lawson argues the anthem should reflect the heritage of its legendary New Zealand founder, calling it “completely bulls***” that God Save the King is currently used. McLaren was founded by New Zealander Bruce McLaren in 1963.
