New Zealand’s top female tennis player Lulu Sun has continued her remarkable run, defeating top-seeded Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets to reach the semifinals of the WTA 125 tournament in Jinan, China.
The sixth seed broke Zakharova’s serve when it mattered most and sealed victory with a powerful serve on match point. Sun, 24, has now won nine of her last ten matches and eliminated a tournament’s No.1 seed in each of her last three events.
Her ranking is expected to rise from 124 to about 114, and a tournament win could propel her into the world’s top 100 ahead of January’s Australian Open.
