Manchester City seized control of their Carabao Cup semi-final against holders Newcastle United as new signing Antoine Semenyo and substitute Rayan Cherki scored in a 0–2 first-leg win at St James’ Park.
Semenyo, who joined from Bournemouth for £65m less than a week ago, opened the scoring with a close-range finish and later had another goal ruled out, while Cherki struck deep into stoppage time to double City’s lead.
Newcastle were left to regret missed chances, hitting the woodwork twice and wasting early opportunities, as City now take a commanding advantage back to the Etihad ahead of the second leg on 4 February.
