Mbappé apologises after Mao joke sparks backlash in China

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has apologised after joking about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong during a French talk show appearance, triggering widespread criticism in China and prompting several Chinese brands to sever ties with him.

The controversy arose after Mbappé described a meme depicting his face superimposed on an image resembling Mao, referring to the figure as a Chinese dictator. The footballer subsequently acknowledged that his remarks were ill-judged and apologised to those offended, while Spain’s La Liga also expressed regret.

Chinese football forums and social media users condemned the comments, with some calling for a boycott of Mbappé and Real Madrid. The backlash highlights the political sensitivity surrounding Mao’s legacy in China, where the Communist Party continues to revere the former leader despite the millions of deaths associated with his rule.
