McIlroy condemns Ryder Cup fan abuse after wife hit by thrown drink

Rory McIlroy has denounced the “unacceptable and abusive behaviour” of some American fans at the Ryder Cup after his wife Erica was struck by a drink on the 17th tee at Bethpage.

Despite Europe’s 15-13 victory, McIlroy and playing partner Shane Lowry said the abuse directed at Erica was shocking, with McIlroy vowing such conduct would not be tolerated when Ireland hosts the centenary event in 2027.

The world number two said golf should be held to higher standards of respect and etiquette, stressing that while most fans were supportive, a vocal minority crossed the line.
