Newcastle sign Gonzalez in deal worth up to £52m

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City in a deal potentially worth £52 million, with the 24-year-old agreeing a long-term contract at St James’ Park.

Gonzalez said he was delighted to join the Magpies and praised the club’s passionate support, having previously experienced the atmosphere on Tyneside as an opposition player.

His arrival gives Newcastle valuable Premier League experience following the recent departures of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier. Head coach Matthias Jaissle described Gonzalez as a powerful ball carrier who remains composed under pressure, contributes defensively and has the physical attributes required for English football.

Gonzalez leaves City after a season and a half, with his departure following the club’s major midfield recruitment and making him the fourth senior midfielder to exit this summer after Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.
