Odegaard strike sends Arsenal back to the summit after Brighton scare

Arsenal climbed back to the top of the Premier League as Martin Odegaard opened his league account for the season in a tense win over Brighton that was far more uncomfortable than it first appeared.

The Gunners dominated the opening half and were rewarded when Bukayo Saka set up Odegaard after a loose Brighton clearance, before doubling their lead early in the second period via an unfortunate own goal.

Brighton, largely subdued until then, sparked into life through Yasin Ayari’s effort and Diego Gomez’s rebound, setting up a nervous finish in which David Raya was forced into a brilliant save to deny Yankuba Minteh and preserve Arsenal’s victory.

Final score: Arsenal 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion.
