New Zealand driver Shane van Gisbergen delivered a commanding performance at Watkins Glen to claim his first NASCAR Cup Series win of the season, leading most of the race and comfortably finishing ahead of the field.
Fresh off his 37th birthday, van Gisbergen started from pole and again showcased his road-course mastery, pulling away from rivals throughout the New York event.
A late pit stop briefly dropped him deep in the order, but the Trackhouse Racing driver rapidly charged back through the pack before reclaiming the lead with six laps remaining and sealing victory by seven seconds over Michael McDowell.
The triumph was van Gisbergen’s seventh NASCAR win overall and continued his remarkable dominance on road and street circuits since moving from Supercars to American stock car racing.
