Tiger Woods has withdrawn due to illness during the second round of his return to the PGA Tour at the Genesis Invitational.
Hosting the event at the Riviera Country Club, Woods left the course on a cart after starting the seventh hole. This was his first PGA Tour appearance since withdrawing from the Masters last April due to injury during the third round. Before his withdrawal in California, Woods was two over par.
Despite golf injuries and undergoing ankle fusion surgery after a serious car accident in February 2021, Woods’ return was highly anticipated. He scored five birdies and six bogeys for a one-over-par 72 in the opening round.
Sporting a reminiscent outfit of his PGA Tour debut in 1992, Woods started his second round well but soon faced setbacks, potentially jeopardizing his chance to make the cut.
Woods has been battling back spasms and soreness in his leg, which was surgically repaired, but his withdrawal was stated to be due to illness and not related to his long-standing physical issues, according to rules official Mark Dusbabek.
Over the last four seasons Woods has played in only nine official events, missing the cut twice and withdrawing three times.
