Two athletes, one from Mexico and one from Great Britain, tragically died while competing in the sprint category of the World Triathlon Championships held in Torremolinos, Spain.
The Mexican athlete was identified as 79-year-old Roger Mas Colomer, while the identity of the British athlete was not released. The deaths occurred on the first day of the competition, which featured non-professional triathletes competing in various age groups.
The sprint category included a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride, and a 5km run. Both World Triathlon and the respective national federations expressed their condolences and offered support to the families of the athletes.
The World Triathlon organisation, along with the Spanish Federation, is working closely with the families of the deceased to provide support during this difficult time.
The cause of death for either competitor has not yet been disclosed.
The championships, which feature over 5,500 athletes from 79 countries, continue with several events scheduled, culminating with the Elite Men’s Finals on Sunday.
