Berks and Bucks Football Association has issued an “inclusive language guide” advising football players to avoid gendered phrases such as “come on lads,” recommending alternatives like “come on team” to foster “inclusivity”.

The 26-page guide also discourages terms like “linesman” in favour of “assistant referee” and suggests replacing “guys” with “everyone” in team talks.

The association said inclusive language helps ensure all players feel welcome, while Community and Inclusion Manager Callum Salhotra stressed football’s power to unite communities.

However, Conservative MP Sir John Hayes criticised the move as “daft” and “sinister,” dismissing the guidance and reiterating the phrase himself. The Berks and Bucks FA oversees 34,000 players and 600 clubs across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and parts of Oxfordshire.
