USA ends 46-Year wait with dramatic Olympic ice hockey gold over Canada

Olympic ice hockey final 2026

The United States has claimed its first men’s Olympic ice hockey gold medal in 46 years after defeating long-time rivals Canada 2–1 in overtime at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Jack Hughes sealed victory with the sudden-death winner following a relentless Canadian assault that was repeatedly denied by outstanding American goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Matt Boldy earlier gave the USA the lead before Cale Makar equalised late in the second period, with Canada dominating possession and shots but unable to convert key chances.

The triumph marks America’s first Olympic men’s hockey title since the famous 1980 “Miracle on Ice” and completes a historic double after the US women also beat Canada for gold earlier in the Games.

  1. A “Jack Hughes” was the last person struck from the 1980 “Miracle on ice” Olympic team.
That team eventually moved to New Jersey where another “Jack Hughes” made the winning goal and won Gold for the USA 👍
