World Athletics president Sebastian Coe has warned the global Olympic sports calendar may need to be “re-engineered” in response to “climate change”, after athletes endured extreme heat and humidity at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

With temperatures topping 30C and humidity over 90%, concerns centered on the safety of endurance events like the marathon.

Coe suggested some competitions may need to be shifted to cooler months or held separately to protect athletes, acknowledging the difficulty but stressing change may be necessary sooner rather than later.
