Arakan army secures decisive victory over Myanmar junta

The Arakan Army (AA) has captured the BGP5 barracks in a brutal siege, marking a significant defeat for Myanmar’s military junta in northern Rakhine State.

The victory grants the AA control of the entire Myanmar-Bangladesh border, a key strategic area.

The battle, which began in June, saw hundreds of casualties as AA fighters overcame heavy fortifications, landmines, and constant air bombardment.

Video footage shows injured and demoralized junta soldiers surrendering after months of isolation and dwindling supplies.

The loss further highlights the junta’s declining control, with only the Rakhine capital Sittwe firmly under its grip, while the AA moves closer to becoming the first insurgent group to fully govern a state in Myanmar.

Despite their gains, the AA faces challenges in managing the devastated region, where large-scale displacement, famine warnings, and destroyed infrastructure persist. Questions remain about the treatment of the remaining Rohingya population, who have historically faced persecution from both the military and the Rakhine ethnic majority.

While the AA promises an “inclusive vision” for an independent Rakhine, tensions with Rohingya communities linger, exacerbated by divisions over alliances during the conflict.
