Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has sparked fresh debate over migration and demographics in Europe, claiming the Belgian capital no longer reflects its national identity.
Commenting on social media, Musk pointed to recent figures suggesting that almost three-quarters of minors in Brussels are of non-European background, arguing the scale of change is unprecedented.
The data, reported by Remix News and drawn from Belgium’s official statistics agency StatBel, indicates that around 72.9% of residents aged 17 and under in Brussels have an immigrant background, while just over 10% are classed as being of exclusively Belgian origin. Across all age groups, an estimated 78% of the city’s population is said to be of non-Belgian origin.
Musk echoed concerns raised by entrepreneur Mario Nawfal, who argued the shift was driven by deliberate policy choices, particularly family reunification.
Belgian lawmaker Filip Dewinter described the trend as “population replacement,” a claim also made by critics in other European cities such as Frankfurt.
The issue has also drawn commentary from Donald Trump, who has warned that unchecked migration could fundamentally reshape Europe within decades.
