Channel illegal migrant arrivals surpass 2023 total

The number of illegal migrants crossing the English Channel to reach the UK has surpassed the total for all of 2023, with more than 1,200 people arriving in just the past week.

The record was reached as the Border Force vessel Defender brought in 55 additional migrants, bringing the yearly total to 29,451, just above last year’s count of 29,437.

With over two months remaining in 2024, authorities predict the final count could reach up to 40,000 illegal migrants, depending on weather conditions. Despite choppy seas, determined smuggling gangs continue pushing small boats across the Channel, with rising fatalities among migrants adding urgency to the crisis.

The Labour government and Home Office officials reaffirmed their commitment to “dismantling” people-smuggling networks, which they say have grown more aggressive and sophisticated. Keir Starmer’s pledge to “smash the gangs” has so far proved ineffective.

  1. It’s been reported: Canada is signing up the migrants to the military. They’re all foreigners with no family or loyalty to Canadians.
There’s concerns they could be used against the people.
