China has executed 11 members of the Ming family, a criminal clan that operated large-scale scam centres and gambling operations in the Myanmar border town of Laukkaing, according to Chinese state media.
The group was sentenced in September by a court in Zhejiang province for crimes including homicide, fraud, illegal detention and running gambling dens, after being detained in 2023 and handed over to Chinese authorities by ethnic militias who seized Laukkaing during fighting with Myanmar’s military.
Chinese courts said the Ming family’s operations generated more than 10 billion yuan between 2015 and 2023, resulted in the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens, and injured many others.
More than 20 additional family members received prison terms, while the clan’s leader, Ming Xuechang, died by suicide in 2023 while evading arrest. The executions are the first carried out against Myanmar-based scam bosses, with further death sentences imposed on members of other families and additional trials still ongoing.
Whilst bringing them to justice is fine, extraditing people to kill them is very much not fine. China needs to end this dependence on the death penalty.
I can think of some Labour MP’s who deserve the same sentences.
Now there’s a thought on how to solve the gang problem.
The old ways, wish they were here.
Good riddance. They kidnapped people and forced them to commit fraud
I do not think these 11 people will commit any further crimes.
