Huw Edwards, a former high-profile BBC newsreader, faces three charges of making indecent images of children, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Edwards, 62, had a 40-year career with the BBC and was its highest-earning newsreader.
He resigned in April following allegations that he paid a 17-year-old for indecent images, though police initially found no evidence of criminal behaviour. The recent charges stem from alleged offences between December 2020 and April 2022, involving images shared on WhatsApp.
Edwards was arrested on 8 November 2023 and charged on 26 June, with his court appearance scheduled for 31 July.
The charges involve six category A images, 12 category B images, and 19 category C images, found in a WhatsApp chat.
Edwards had been off the air since last summer before his resignation, which was advised on medical grounds. Despite the allegations, he was still the third-highest-paid presenter at the BBC, earning between £475,000 and £479,999 in the 2023-24 financial year.
