Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, aged 72, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty in France’s largest rape trial.
The trial, which lasted three months, involved 51 men, including Dominique, who were accused of drugging and raping Gisèle Pelicot over nearly a decade.
Dominique was convicted on all charges, including aggravated rape, attempted aggravated rape, and taking indecent images of his daughter and daughters-in-law.
The trial concluded with an emotional scene where Gisèle and her family remained stoic as the verdicts were read.
The case has not only shocked France but has also captured global attention, leading to significant public support for Gisèle Pelicot, who waived her right to anonymity to bring attention to the issue.
Hundreds gathered outside the Avignon courthouse, chanting in solidarity as the verdicts were announced.
The sentences for the other 50 men ranged from 3 to 15 years, with some already having served time since their arrests in 2021.
The trial has sparked a broader discussion in France regarding the legal definition of rape, especially in cases where victims are drugged and unconscious.
