A helicopter crash into the roof of the Double Tree Hotel by Hilton in Cairns, Far North Queensland, at around 2 a.m., ignited a massive fireball, leading to the evacuation of up to 400 people.
Emergency services responded quickly to the incident, which occurred after the helicopter was seen flying at high speed before impact. A male patient was assessed with life-threatening injuries, while an elderly couple staying in the room below the crash were treated for shock and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The crash led to the activation of a public safety preservation act, with an exclusion zone established around the area.
