23-year-old Romeo Nance was suspected of killing eight people.
The victims were found at multiple locations in Joliet Illinois, with seven discovered in two nearby houses on Monday, and one found earlier on Sunday. The grisly findings prompted a manhunt as Nance was considered armed and dangerous.
The police eventually located Nance near Natalia, Texas, where he is believed to have fatally shot himself after a confrontation with law enforcement officials around 20:30 local time on Monday.
Identification of the victims and the manner of their deaths are being determined by the Will County Coroner’s Office, and the investigation remains active.
Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans said it was one of the worst crime scenes he has encountered in his 25-year career. The motive for the attack is unclear, but it’s believed that Nance knew the victims, who were all part of the same family.
Before Nance was found in Texas, he was believed to be driving a red Toyota Camry. Investigators connected this vehicle to two separate shootings in Joliet a day earlier. In one incident, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare, originally from Nigeria, was shot in the head and killed. In the other, a 42-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the leg. Both shootings were linked to the vehicle associated with the discovery of the seven bodies on Monday.
