Japan refuses U.S. pressure to end Russian LNG imports

Japan will continue importing Russian liquefied natural gas despite Washington’s calls to halt purchases, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reportedly told US President Donald Trump during his Tokyo visit on Tuesday.

Takaichi emphasized Japan’s reliance on Russian LNG, which makes up about 9% of its total imports, and warned that an embargo would damage the nation’s economy.

The stance comes amid US efforts to isolate Moscow’s energy sector, with Trump and Treasury Secretary Bessent urging Tokyo to follow the EU’s decision to phase out Russian gas by 2028.

However, Takaichi, who recently took office, reaffirmed Japan’s priority of maintaining energy security, joining other nations like Türkiye in resisting Washington’s pressure.
