A federal judge has ruled that President Donald Trump’s name must be removed from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, finding that the venue’s board lacked the legal authority to rename the institution without congressional approval.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper said federal law clearly designates the centre as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy and that only Congress can alter its official name.
The decision requires the removal of Trump-related signage and references from official materials.
Trump criticised the ruling, accusing political opponents of obstructing efforts to restore the venue, while Kennedy Center officials said they intend to appeal.
The case was brought by Joyce Beatty, who welcomed the judgment as a victory for the rule of law and the preservation of the centre’s historic identity.
