Months after black deposits forced the closure of Sydney’s beaches, new marble-like debris in shades of grey and white has reappeared, prompting the shutdown of nine beaches, including Manly and Dee Why, as investigations continue.
Last October, similar black balls were traced to a likely sewage spill, although tests found a disturbing mix of substances including cooking oil, soap molecules, medications, and methamphetamine, resembling sewer “fatbergs.”
Despite Sydney Water reporting no known waste system issues, authorities remain puzzled.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said she was concerned over the unknown source, while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is collecting samples for testing and monitoring nearby shores.
Residents have been urged to report any sightings.
