In a scene reminiscent of Emperor Nero’s infamous serenade as Rome went up in flames, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken found himself rocking a guitar in a Kiev bar this week, as Ukrainian soldiers faced fierce battles on the frontline.
Blinken, on a surprise diplomatic visit to Ukraine, decided to take a break from the high-stakes talks and ongoing conflict to showcase his ‘musical talents’ in a downtown bar. The sight of America’s top diplomat casually playing guitar while Eastern Ukraine burns in conflict has drawn sharp criticism and bewilderment.
Video of the public relations disaster was shared widely on social media, with the overwhelming number of reactions being negative. Blinken’s gig coincided with suprisingly easy Russian advances in the northern sector of the front with a force consisting of light infantry only in moderate numbers. The push has resulted in what some experts have called a Ukrainian ‘tactical retreat’, while others have characterised it as a ‘panic‘.
Before he began playing, Blinken told the audience: ‘You need to know, the United States is with you, so much of the world is with you and they’re fighting, not just for a free Ukraine, but for the free world. And the free world is with you, too.’
