An Ohio man has been charged after allegedly threatening to kill US Vice President J.D. Vance ahead of a planned visit to the state.
Authorities say Shannon Mathre, of Toledo, was arrested by Secret Service agents on February 6 and charged with making threats against a successor to the presidency. According to investigators, Mathre allegedly claimed he would track Vance’s location and use an M14 rifle to carry out the attack.
Officials said the investigation also uncovered that Mathre was in possession of child sexual abuse material. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison on the threat charge and up to 20 years on the additional charge.
The case comes amid what officials describe as rising political violence and hostility in the United States, with several recent high-profile incidents involving attacks or threats against political figures.
According to online sources, agents also discovered multiple digital files of child sexual abuse material in Mathre’s possession. Further investigation found that between Dec. 31 and Jan 21, Mathre had been engaged in both the receipt and distribution of such images.
