Outrage as Starmer moves to reopen ‘Troubles’ prosecutions against elderly veterans

Keir Starmer news

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been accused of “betraying” veterans after signalling he could repeal the 2023 Legacy Act, which shields former soldiers from prosecution for actions during the Northern Ireland Troubles.

Critics, including Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick, warn the move would reopen dozens of inquests and subject elderly veterans to “two-tier justice,” while ex-IRA members retain immunity granted under previous agreements.

Veterans’ groups and supporters argue the decision undermines military service, with more than 190,000 signing a petition to protect those who served. Jenrick urged Starmer to reverse course, saying the repeal would not only dishonour veterans but also damage future armed forces recruitment.
