Rescue teams in Indonesia are working through narrow underground culverts, with only 60cm of access, to reach survivors of a building collapse.

Authorities say efforts are focused on the critical 72-hour “golden timeframe,” though survival could extend longer with fluids and vitamins.

The collapse occurred as large numbers of people were gathering for prayer. Several victims have been confirmed dead, while others remain trapped as rescuers continue operations under difficult conditions.

  1. The unauthorized repairs and expansion at the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School were reportedly carried out by local contractors hired by the school’s management, without proper permits or structural assessments. The project involved adding two additional floors to a century-old building originally designed to support only one level. Investigators are now probing whether the contractors followed any engineering standards or safety protocols.
Local officials have stated that the school’s administrators may face legal consequences for negligence and violating building codes. The collapse has reignited scrutiny over unregulated construction practices in Indonesia, especially in religious and educational institutions that often operate outside formal oversight.
Another major building collapse involving China Railways occurred in Bangkok, Thailand, on 28 March 2025, when a 33-story skyscraper—intended for the State Audit Office—collapsed during the Myanmar earthquake (magnitude 7.7).
    🏗️ Collapse Overview
    – Builder: Joint venture between China Railway No.10 Engineering Group and Italian-Thai Development.
    – Location: Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, near Chatuchak Market and Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
    – Status: Building was topped out and 30% complete, undergoing glass wall and piping installation.
    – Casualties:
    – 92 confirmed dead
    – 9 injured
    – 4 missing as of mid-May.
    – Victims included migrant workers from Myanmar and Cambodia.
    🌍 Earthquake Link
    – Though Bangkok is over 1,000 km from the epicenter in Myanmar, the super shear rupture and soft soil amplification caused severe shaking.
    – The building was the only structure in Thailand to collapse during the quake, making it one of the deadliest single structural failures in Thai history.
    🔍 Civic Fallout
    – Executives linked to China Railway were later implicated in a corruption scandal tied to the collapse.
    – The incident has intensified scrutiny of foreign-led infrastructure projects under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
