Russia says it has liberated key Donbass city of Seversk (Video)

Russia says its forces have captured Seversk

Russia’s Defence Ministry has says its forces have taken full control of the key Donbass city of Seversk, saying Ukrainian troops have been completely pushed out of the area.

The ministry said the city, located in the Donetsk People’s Republic with a pre-conflict population of about 120,000, is now fully under Russian control.

Russia’s Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov made the announcement during a briefing to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the progress of Moscow’s Special Military Operation (SMO).

The capture of Seversk opens a route toward the regional centres of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, both key logistical hubs for Ukrainian forces.

The Defence Ministry also released video footage it said showed Russian troops conducting security checks and providing food, water and medical assistance to civilians who remained in the city, while clearing residential areas and roads of explosive hazards.

Putin said Russia now holds the strategic initiative along the front, as Moscow continues its push across eastern Ukraine. Ukraine has not confirmed the claim and continues to reject any territorial concessions, while Russia maintains it will pursue its objectives militarily if no political settlement is reached.
