A senior Russian military intelligence figure has been hospitalised after being shot multiple times in what authorities believe was an assassination attempt outside his Moscow home on Friday.
Investigators say Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, first deputy chief of the GRU, was attacked by a gunman who fled the scene and is now being hunted by police, while forensic teams examine evidence at the location.
Officials have not confirmed who was behind the attack, though Alekseev has previously been criticised by Ukrainian intelligence.
The 64-year-old has held his senior GRU role since 2011, overseeing counter-terror operations including those linked to Syria, and was awarded Russia’s Hero of the Russian Federation honour in 2017.
