Several feared dead after Mosque explosion in Nigeria

Several people are feared dead or injured after an explosion struck a mosque area in the Gamboru market of Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, during evening prayers.

Eyewitnesses reported the blast inside a busy market area, with unconfirmed reports suggesting at least seven fatalities, though authorities have yet to release an official toll.

Footage circulating online appears to show the aftermath, with dust hanging in the air as people gathered at the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility, but the region has repeatedly been hit by attacks on mosques and crowded locations, particularly in the long-running insurgency led by Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, which has plagued north-east Nigeria since 2009.
