The UK Labour party has reportedly reversed its plan to ban smoking in pub gardens, with leadera fearing the policy could harm businesses.
Instead, the smoking ban will be limited to areas outside hospitals and schools, sparing pub gardens, stadiums, and outdoor restaurants from restrictions. Starmer had initially defended the proposal as a way to reduce the burden on the NHS, but a “furious” public backlash and a recent impact assessment—suggesting the ban could lead to job losses and pub closures—prompted the U-turn.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has called for a national debate on smoking regulations, while critics, including Reform UK’s Nigel Farage, warned the ban could spell the “end of British pubs.”
This policy change comes as the government faces increasing pressure to address youth vaping, with top doctors urging a ban on disposable e-cigarettes and non-tobacco flavours.
England’s goal of becoming “smoke-free by 2030” remains.
