A third foreign national linked to a university in Wuhan, China, has been arrested in the United States for illegally smuggling biological material to a University of Michigan lab.

On June 8, federal agents apprehended Chengxuan Han, a Ph.D. student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Authorities allege Han secretly shipped four undeclared packages containing roundworm-related biological material to the university and later misled U.S. Customs officials.

The arrest follows the recent detention of two other researchers, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, for allegedly importing a classified fungal pathogen. U.S. Attorney Gorgon described the incidents as part of a growing pattern of unauthorised biological transfers, raising serious concerns about oversight in academic research and national biosecurity.

  1. Yeah, Chinese smuggle poisonous insects as well. It’s a quiet attack many have known for years. Finally the authorities are waking up.
