Trump and Colombia’s Petro have phone conversation

Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro phone call

U.S. President Donald Trump has held a phone call with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, signalling a tentative thaw in relations after a prolonged period of sharp rhetoric and diplomatic strain.

The conversation came after tensions flared again following the US raid in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, an operation Petro strongly criticised.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said Petro had called to discuss disagreements over drugs and other issues, adding that he appreciated the Colombian leader’s tone and looked forward to meeting him, with plans underway for a possible White House visit.

Petro said the call marked their first direct contact since his election in 2022 and stressed the importance of restoring communication between senior officials, warning that the absence of dialogue risked conflict.

He later said the two leaders disagreed on Washington’s approach to Latin America, arguing the region should not be treated as an oil reserve and urging US investment in clean energy instead.

The exchange follows last year’s sanctions imposed by Trump on Petro, including the revocation of his US visa, after Petro condemned US strikes in the Caribbean and was accused by Trump of links to drug trafficking. While divisions remain, both leaders framed the call as a step toward renewed dialogue after months of escalating hostility.

    • Yes that’s how statecraft is done, right? Behave like savages, expect others to cooperate and all will go well. Shame it didn’t work for Hitler, Mussolini and well any Fascist clown show government, who thinks others will be robbed of their human dignity and right to self determination, indefinitely.

  1. Waste of time, they are out to impose the Monroe doctrine on the people of Latin America at the point of a gun. Imperialist thugs.

  2. “….looking forward to meeting him, with plans underway for a possible White House visit.”
Just make sure, Mr Petro, that you have no Cuban ‘specialists’ guarding you.
    What a sh*t show!
    What sh*t ‘civilizations’?!
