U.S. imposes fresh Iran sanctions hours after nuclear talks resume

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that progress on Tehran’s nuclear programme will only be possible through “calm” negotiations without threats, following US-Iran talks held in Oman.

The eight-hour discussions in Muscat, mediated by Oman, marked the first renewed diplomatic contact after what Araghchi described as “eight turbulent months,” calling the meeting a “good start” and noting both sides agreed dialogue should continue. He said the talks took place against a backdrop of “great distrust” built up over the past year.

Shortly after the negotiations concluded, Washington announced a new sanctions package targeting 15 companies, two individuals, and 14 vessels allegedly linked to what US officials described as illicit Iranian petroleum and petrochemical trade.

The measures were framed as part of the administration’s ongoing “maximum pressure campaign.” Araghchi said Iran had made clear during talks that diplomacy must be conducted without coercion, adding that Tehran enters negotiations “with open eyes and a steady memory of the past year.”

Relations between the two countries remain strained following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last year, alongside regional tensions and internal unrest inside Iran that Tehran claims was encouraged by foreign powers. While Washington is pushing for limits on uranium enrichment and missile development, Iran maintains its nuclear activities are peaceful. Since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement and reinstated sanctions, Iran has reduced compliance with the deal and increased uranium enrichment levels to around 60%.

  1. The logic was obvious two days ago as they backed themselves into their silly corner. The dumb yanks need to either attack or retreat with no middle option. https://news-pravda.com/world/2026/02/07/2061422.html

Iran has demonstrated 2nd and 3rd strike capability so these dumb yanks know they can’t sustain any short war against Iran. It just can’t be a quick war because the Iranians will just repeatedly keep hitting the dumb yanks back. Can’t have fuel prices rising as the American summer driving season approaches.

  2. The US is a duplicity not to be trusted bad actor representing a failed rogue state
That is in an advanced state of disintegration and collapse
Trump wants to speed up the demise of the dollar in lowering lower interest rates which will lead to money printing and raise inflation further eroding the currency leading to its collapse
Adding to the burden placed on Americans with Trumps tariffs
Now wanting to spend 1.5 trillion on a military defense budget
Trump needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat
    Which is Iran
    Thank God for Marsden Point
