US House Speaker accuses legacy media outlet CBS of editing interview to alter context

US House Speaker Mike Johnson has accused CBS of selectively editing his interview on Face the Nation to distort the meaning of his statements.

Johnson highlighted two specific examples, including his remarks about federal aid delays for North Carolina following Hurricane Helene and concerns over non-citizens on voter rolls.

In both cases, key parts of his answers were omitted, changing the context of his statements. Johnson shared the original footage on social media to contrast with the aired segment, criticising the network for misrepresenting his words.

Johnson, frustrated by the edits, stated he would no longer grant pre-recorded interviews to CBS.

This incident adds to growing criticism of the legacy media network, which had also faced accusations of ‘fake news’ and selectively editing an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris during its “60 Minutes” programme.

Former President Donald Trump labelled the Harris interview “the greatest fraud in broadcast history” and called for CBS’s broadcast license to be revoked.

CBS has yet to release the full unedited footage to address the controversy.
