Victorian government loses legal battle to keep COVID lockdown briefings secret

Victoria COVID news

The Victorian state government in Australia has lost its bid to keep secret the internal communications and briefings that informed its COVID lockdown decisions, after the Court of Appeal rejected the state’s attempt to block their release.

Liberal MP David Davis, who lodged the Freedom of Information request in 2020, welcomed the decision, accusing the Labor government of a prolonged cover-up.

The court upheld a ruling from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), which found that the documents, estimated to be around 7,000 pages, held significant public interest and should be made public.

Despite arguments that their release could hinder “open communication among officials”, the judges found no legal errors in VCAT’s decision and dismissed the state’s appeal on all seven grounds.

  1. Great result. However the sods will try to redact everything that compromises themselves. The next legal case will involve challenging the censoring of the documents. Keep at it, the truth will out.
