Social media opinion was immediately divided over whether the bizarre sky colour was a good or apocalyptic sign.
A social media video that went viral has shown the sky over Zhoushan, a Chinese city in the vicinity of the lockdown-hit Shanghai, turning red over the weekend.
Aside from the coloured sky, the city was also covered with thick fog.
Some social media users suggested that the scarlet sky was a result of an unreported fire, but authorities said no fire existed, according to Shanghai Daily. The unnatural sky colour was rather prompted by refraction in low-sitting clouds stemming from a fishing boat’s red light.
The report noted that the sky returned to normal after some time.

The video footage sent chills down many people’s spine, with some users alleging that “doomsday” was coming. Others tried to brush the negativity away and suggested that the red sky represented the colours of the Chinese flag.
Red is auspicious colour in the Chinese culture for centuries.
