The man now in his late 50s abused six relatives over a period of about 30 years.
The first series of offences took place against victims when the man was a teenager. He was forgiven by the wider family.
However, his offending continued against a second group of relatives some years later. When this was discovered by the earlier group they made a complaint to the police.
The offender, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of a raft of charges by a jury earlier this year of the following offences, some of which were representative charges:
- 12 x indecency with a girl aged under 12
- 1 x indecent assault
- 1 x indecency with a girl aged 12 – 16
- 5 x sexual conduct with a girl under 12 outside New Zealand
- 2 x sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection
- 1 x rape
- 3 x sexual violation by rape
He was sentenced to 17 years, and must serve half before being eligible for parole.
