Armed police have been deployed to secure a house in Kaikohe following a shooting that occurred around 12:20 pm today on Tawa Street.
It’s the second shooting incident in the Northland town in less than 24 hours.
The latest incident left a man with a serious gunshot wound to his leg. He was airlifted to Whangārei Hospital in a serious but stable condition. The suspect fled the scene in a ute.
Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Fouhy said the shooting was believed to be an isolated event. He assured the public there is no wider risk. While it remains unclear whether the shooting was gang-related, police are pursuing possible leads.
Today’s shooting follows a separate incident where a man was shot in the neck with an air rifle south of Kaikohe and had to be flown to Auckland Hospital for surgery. Police told legacy media the two incidents were not believed to be related.
Police said forces from the wider Far North region, including those assigned to Waitangi for Treaty commemorations have been mobilised in response.
Just another normal day for Kaikohe.
