A man has been hospitalised in critical condition after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC on Sunday, the city’s emergency services said.
Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for DC Fire and EMS, told reporters that the man has been hospitalized with “critical life-threatening injuries.”
Independent journalist Talia Jane said she obtained the footage of the incident, which shows that the man was wearing a military uniform and described himself as “an active duty member of the US Air Force.”
According to Jane, the man said “I will no longer be complicit in genocide” and shouted “Free Palestine.” The journalist posted a graphic photo of a man in fatigues engulfed in flames.
CNN, which also reviewed the video, said that the man identified himself as Aaron Bushnell. US Air Force spokeswoman Rose Riley later confirmed to CNN that “an active duty airman was involved in today’s incident.”
Multiple pro-Palestine protests were held outside Israeli missions abroad after Israel launched its military campaign against the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The protesters have been demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting the staggering civilian death toll. In early December, a man set himself on fire in front of the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, Georgia.
Pro-Israeli demonstrations were also held in Washington and other cities, where people mourned the Israelis killed by Hamas and demanded the release of hostages taken by the group during its attack on October 7, which triggered the ongoing war.
Nearly 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the start of the conflict, according to the local Hamas-run authorities. Israel has rejected the accusations of “genocide,” arguing that Hamas uses civilians as human shields and should ultimately be held responsible for the deaths in Gaza.
If he really wanted to make a difference, he should have set the embassy on fire, either way it is just dumb.

As a former USAF Service Member of 21 years, I can understand Airman Bushnell’s frustration and conscience objection to being a second party to a massive genocide that has been ongoing in three parts (1948, 1967 and today).
Why?
I flew US Embassy and Consulate support missions into Tel-Aviv.
While many (including the MSM) tout that ‘Israel is our friend, and ally, blah blah blah’, nothing can be further from the truth!
Upon landing, my aircraft was followed by the IDF with a 155mm recoiless weapon mounted on a Jeep.
Upon shutting-down the engines, our Loadmaster opened the crew door and was knocked down by IDF troops in full combat gear, complete with loaded Uzis.
They then stormed the flight deck, and pointed loaded Uzis at our heads. Their fingers were on the trigger.
An IDF Major walked thru the aircraft in a slow and arrogant fashion, and then with-drew the troops from the interior of the aircraft.
They then disappeared…
Other nations simply do not do this. The scenario was repeated every time a military aircraft landed at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.
While the aircraft was unloaded and then re-configured for the mission out, we went inside to find lunch.
Several kiosk operators saw us enter the terminal, and promptly closed their stands.
We were mobbed by prostitutes who cruised the terminal concourses. Very nasty & pushy as well in typical Jewish fashion as seen in the US’s Jewish enclaves in the major cities there.
I finally found a currency exchange window, as it was told to us that the Israelis did not accept US currency.
Finally found a small eatery in the terminal that served blintzes. Cost for four blintzes? The same as US45.00.
Several hours later we lit the engines and taxied out. Upon holding for inbound air traffic, the IDF once again appeared, pointing the recoiless weapon and Uzis at us from the holding area.
After getting airborne, we noted IDF fighters at around 15,000 feet, which followed us out past the International Boundary and out of Israeli Airspace.
Upon landing back in England, I filed a formal complaint with our Operations Officer, and made a copy to send to the US State Department and the US Embassy in Tel Aviv. The latter two I found out later never made it there.
After I dropped the paperwork off to the Ops Officer (a USAF Lt. Col.), I was called back to his office 90 minutes later.
When I got there, the Ops Officer had three men in suits who threatened me NOT to report the treatment or the ongoing Israeli IDF policy of storming ‘Allied Aircraft’.
I told all three men NOT to ever send me or my crew to Israel ever again!!
18 months later, I got RIFted paperwork, and left the USAF. Went to work for a regional airline, and joined the Army National Guard as a chopper pilot flying Vietnam-era Hueys.
I then filed the complaint with not only with the Embassy overseas, but with the State Department in D.C, and also with my two US Senators and my Congressman.
I heard nothing back, but noted being photographed in public, and suits loitering around the airfield when I flew on the week-ends.
It is VERY frustrating to a military member to know that War Crimes, Human Rights Violations, Violations of the Geneva Convention, and Violations too the Articles of War are being violated en-masse, and the so-called ‘elected members’ of both the House and the Senate are facilitating these things due to the false religious doctrine of ‘supporting God’s Elect’ (which the Israelis and Jews ARE NOT!) which will lead to blessings, and the fact that BILLIONS have been handed over to Israel for decades due to the Mossad compromising those very members of the House and Senate via bribes, blackmailing, campaign donations, or threats of harm.
I believe that Airman Bushnell speaks for many in the US Armed Forces who are sick, disgusted and tired of the pro-Israeli rhetoric when their plans for Gaza, the West Bank and then the rest of the Middle East and the West have already been laid out by the severely, mentally-ill Netanyahu and his homicidal, psychopathinc ‘War Cabinet’.

I watch AlJazeera, but not daily as i find its reporting on the suffering of Gaza also unbareable.
